Build Fine Motor Skills with DIY Snow
Do your children resist yucky textures? Do they avoid touching textured toys with their whole hand or fingertips? Do they object to getting cold, hot, or wet?
Here is an activity that’s enticing for so many kids, and can be adapted to any child’s comfort level. Kids can use utensils to mix in ingredients and wear disposable gloves to shape the snow. As they become more familiar with the feel of the snow they can snip off the tips of the disposable gloves one by one to feel for real!
What You'll Need:
Baking soda (like the one used for baking yummy cakes!)
A big bowl or container to mix in
A spoon for stirring
Let's Make Snow!
1. Get Ready: Cover a table with a big sheet of paper or a newspaper. It's easy to clean up.
2. Gather Stuff: Ask a grown-up to help you get two cups of baking soda. Pour it into your bowl.
3. Add Fluffiness: Now, squirt some foam soap into the bowl with the baking soda. Start with a little and add more until it feels super soft and fluffy, just like snow!
4. Mix Mix Mix: Use your spoon to gently stir everything together. Mix it up until it looks and feels like real snow. It might be squishy and cold!
5. Playtime!: Now comes the best part! Use your hands to shape the snow, make snowballs, or anything you like! Can you build a tiny snowman? Let your imagination go wild!
6. Feel and Describe: How does it feel? Is it soft, fluffy, or a bit cold? Talk about it with your friends or a grown-up. What cool things can you make with your snow?
7. Clean Up Fun: When you're done playing, help clean up the snowy mess together. It's like making magic disappear!
Making this snow is not just super fun but also helps your hands get stronger and better at doing tricky things!
